14pt Handicap Tournament

19th April 2008

This year this tournament was subdivided into higher and lower handicap players.

With high hopes, the event was planned for 12 entries but as the day approached the number rapidly dwindled in line with the temperature! With only 6 competitors battling it out at only 6o centigrade and a wind chill factor freezing us to the marrow, everyone valiantly played on into the final cliff-hanger round which commenced with 3 players having won 3 out of their 4 matches.

Victory was ultimately snatched by Alan Smith who had equal wins with Jim Penny but Alan had beaten Jim in their head to head match in an earlier round.

Result of matches were:

  • Alan Smith 11 v Helen Hudson 14
  • Jim Penny 14 v John Thompson   3

REPORT.
The day started wet but warmer than the previous one, and the usual suspects were rapidly out of the starting blocks. Robbie notching up wins against bold novice Graham, then Sean; and Peter beating Brian. Tony had an early day friendly against Jim, who had quite understandably decided to withdraw, given exhaustion following the wind blasting of previous day. This left just six, with all playing all. Then came the most remarkable result of the day. Peter made mistake of pegging one of his balls out early against Graham, then found his shooting prowess completely deserting him. Graham won a memorable victory.  When Brian beat Robbie for the first time in twelve competitive matches,(having already beaten Tony) things were getting interesting. Sean then won a close encounter with Brian, but it was Tony who steadily went about his business, notching up victories against Peter, Robbie, and, in the days last game, Sean. Tony was champion as he was only one with four wins. Peter took the silver spoon.
