An indication of standard of play can be had from fact that, to the best of my knowledge, only one of these matches went to time!
A quick perusal of results shows how even the competition was, with several victories coming against the grain. Due to this, and since different players chose to play differing numbers of games (ranging from 2 to 6), I decided to determine outcome as if it were a complete American Block (Regulation F2b).
Under this system, players are first placed in descending order of the number of games they have won. The following list then emerges.
Three Wins. Robbie Dodds, Brian Christmas, Graham Colclough, Alan Smith, Tony Hudson, Jim Penny.
Two Wins. Julian Remfry.
One Win. Edward Knapton, Allan Knight, Barbara Edwards.
No Wins. Stuart Ray.
In the event of multiple tie (as here), players are then placed in descending order ‘of the number of games they have won in the games played between them’. On this basis, Robbie, Graham & Alan.S. outrank Jim, Brian & Tony.
Repeating the procedure, all three proved to have won one and lost one of three games between them. Hence, necessitating a consideration of aggregate hoop points scored in those three games.
Result is then; Robbie -21, Graham +5 and Alan Smith +16.
Alan Smith thereby becomes champion courtesy of his last gasp two point victory over Brian, who, had he won, would have been outright winner of event! Graham Colclough is runner up, and adds to his canteen of cutlery. Congratulations to both.
I think everyone enjoyed the ‘Advanced Handicap’ format and found it eminently suitable (even Jim). We would commend this variant to C.A. and hope to be able to include results of such games on cards in future.
These weekend events are becoming somewhat oversubscribed, highlighting need for occasional access to additional lawns for such! However, with the possible exception of Robbie (for whom six games was still not enough), nobody was denied a game which they actually desired. Many chose to go early on either Saturday or Sunday or not appear both days. Flexible format therefore compensated admirably for numbers involved.
Brian Christmas. Manager.
